The Fourth China-ASEAN Meteorological Forum

Background

China and ASEAN countries, interconnected by both land and sea, have long stood in solidarity and mutual support. Sharing similarities in the types of meteorological disasters, both are susceptible to threats such as typhoons and torrential rains. Economically, ASEAN countries and China share the fundamental mission of advancing development and enhancing people’s wellbeing. Amid global warming, both sides are confronted with the escalating trend of frequent and recurring extreme weather and climate events. Against this backdrop, China-ASEAN meteorological cooperation not only aligns with the development needs of China and all ASEAN countries, but also delivers benefits to all parties involved, ultimately contributing significantly to safeguarding people’s security and improving their quality of life.

The China-ASEAN Meteorological Forum, an important event under the China-ASEAN Expo framework, integrates into the Belt and Road Initiative, exploits the role of the “Nanning Channel”, fosters meteorological cooperation and exchanges in various fields, and gradually puts in place a sound regional meteorological cooperation system. Since its inception in 2016, the China-ASEAN Meteorological Cooperation Forum has become a useful platform supporting WMO’s sub-regional meteorological cooperation and the cooperation between CMA and NMHSs of ASEAN countries. Three sessions held to date, positive progress has been made in the establishment of cooperation mechanisms, meteorological observation, joint disaster prevention, technical exchanges, climate services, aeronautical meteorology, instrument calibration, meteorological training, etc. This has injected new momentum into deepening China-ASEAN meteorological ties and contributed meteorological expertise to building a closer China-ASEAN community with a shared future.

The upcoming 4th China-ASEAN Meteorological Forum, to be held in Nanning, China from 17 to 19 September 2025, will focus on the theme “Digital Intelligence Empowers Meteorological Cooperation, Early Warnings Benefit People’s Livelihoods”. This Forum will offer a new opportunity to find our potential collaborative areas in the whole value chain of meteorological services, particularly through the effective application of artificial intelligence technologies in early warning.
